entertainment industry coach question 698:What do I do about colleagues who are always trying to "one up" me?

In my book And...Action! I have a chapter "The Godfather," where I address 6 different types of relationships that don't serve you:

1. The Non-Supporters
2. The One-Uppers
3. The Physical Drainers
4. The Mental Drainers
5. The Not-So-Expert Experts
6 The Crashed and Burned

As far as the One-Uppers go, these are the people who no mater what you've accomplished, have done something better. They steal your joy.

You want to surround yourself with people who celebrate your success. You can only go as far as the people with whom you surround yourself. If you're not ready to eliminate the One-Uppers from your life because they hire you or refer you, then continue to tell them about your accomplishments knowing what their response will most likely be (to maintain the work relationship) and then REALLY celebrate your accomplishments with the people who care about you.

entertainment industry coach Question 523: Your blog has lots of entries. Which are the most important?

This was in response to my August 6th blog. Yes, it's true, my blog has a lot of entries. And as far as I know, no repeats. Which means lots of people have lots of questions that are important to them. Because I don't repeat questions, my suggestion is that you start at the beginning because the most commonly asked questions always come at the beginning.

The person who submitted the question may have been in a place where it was important to have an agent or an attorney but may not have had the connections. Someone who doesn't have connections has to start at the beginning with the basics. Not to shamelessly plug, but if you want an easy way to get all of this information, you can simply order my book and it's all right there: a system for laying the foundation for your success in the entertainment industry. Here's a link to check it out if this is where you are in your career: And... Action!

If you're at a more advanced place, where you have hundreds of contacts and you're still not working you need more advanced strategies. You may have to ask me a specific question that I can address, or consider coaching.

There is an index of the questions on the blog so you can sort through them that way. To your success!

entertainment industry coach Question 484: do you answer questions about any other industry than entertainment?

Entertainment is my area of expertise. I've been told by Facebook followers and a few of my blog readers that even though they are not in the entertainment industry, many of the business strategies and advice on business and networking crosses over into their field.

Oddly enough, my old boss said that he read my book and lost 30 lbs by following my And Action tasks. He took the goal setting chapter and the maintaining motivation chapter and mixed in lessons from others that applied and lost weight. Not the intention I envisioned when I wrote the book, but a great result nonetheless.

So basically, you can ask me a question and if I have an answer I will tailor it to my entertainment peeps but the answer will still apply to you.

entertainment industry coach Question 417: Question about a time management technique from your newsletter

the questioncontinued, "I've been experimenting with the time-management techniques from your newsletter. I've been doing the one where I write down 3 things I want to get done for the day and then I throw the paper away. What do I do with the rest of my day?"

It sounds to me like you're a do-er. That technique is for people who can't get started or focused, or simply don't want the pressure of a long to-do list. It works really well for them. If you're finding that you're getting your 3 things done and have plenty of "business time" left in the day, you can certainly do more. You chose the 3 most important things and accomplished them. Celebrate that and then do more on the days you feel like working, or take some time to do something non-work related on the days you feel like giving yourself a break.

My newsletters are jumping off points. You have an "And...Action!" task, because I want to get you started. You've taken the bull by the horns, now make it your own.

And once again, congratulations for taking action and implementing the techniques I write about in my newsletter!

entertainment industry coach question 238: How can I help my husband get work when I'm not in the industry?

That depends on your skill set. If your husband isn't working and he has the talent to be working, he needs help in a number of possible areas:

1. networking
2. marketing
3. selling
4. maintaining relationships
5. follow up

I have coached many couples, where the wife acts as her husband's manager. You also may want to read books on the industry so you have a better understanding of the business.

entertainment industry coach question 219: what do you do when you've achieved all your goals?

This question came from my And...Action! teleseminar today. I liked it because I interpreted it to mean that this gentleman, had set certain career goals for himself years back and is now living those dreams. And still, he was on the call, asking this question.

My answer to him was to come up with new goals, however, at this point, he doesn't have to put the label "goals" on them. I suggested he come up with things that will make life even more fulfilling. Challenges, new adventures, unimagined ideas. Now is the time to perhaps give back, and if you already do, give differently.

And while you're doing that, make sure you continue to use your tools; maintaining relationships, staying current with technology, so should circumstances change, you'll always be in the position to maintain your career stability.

question 206: Does your book and your coaching apply to any business?

Yes, the book, And...Action! is for any entrepreneur, independent contractor, business owner, or sales person who has a passion for movies. Do I address the entertainment industry professionals in it? Yes, so you'd have to substitute your business.

Does my coaching apply, yes. However, my niche is entertainment. I know the industry, I work in the industry, and it's really important to me that the people in the industry get these tools so that they can fulfill their dreams.

So if you're in real estate, or an attorney, or something else that isn't really related to entertainment, I'm probably not your best fit. But for those IN the industry, there's NOBODY better... in my humble opinion (and my mom's).

question 204: How did you write your book? I want to write one.

Different people have different ways of writing books. It also depends on the type of book you want to write. My book, And...Action!, is educational, so it came very easily to me. I knew I wanted to write a book that kept the reader learning business tools, strategies and mindsets, while moving him/her forward over a year's time, so I:

1. Made it 52 chapters
2. Put the 52 topics in an order that set the reader up to succeed
3. Matched movies to the topics to use as metaphors and make the "work" more enjoyable
4. Asked for referrals to publishers
5. Was accepted by the first publisher who read my submission

Writing a fiction book is a whole different process. My advice is to go to a bookstore or library and research books on "how to write a book," if you need concrete instruction. Otherwise, my question for you is "what is your objective for writing the book?" If you want to get it published, you may want to write a book proposal first and test the waters. If you're going to self-publish, just write your book. Good luck!

Question 47:It seems like every successful person took a different path to become successful. How do I know what the right path is?

Unfortunately, there is no "right path," no clear ladders to climb, no rule book.

Fortunately, that means you can choose your own path, build your own ladder, make your own rules.

My suggestions for doing this are:

1. Get mentors. Plural. Get advice from as many successful people as you possibly can

2. Compare their advice and decide what fits you best

3. Take action

4. See what works what doesn't work

5. Keep doing what's working and keep adding new tools to your tool belt

6. Invest in yourself

7. Create financial and emotional stability so you never have to give up on your dream
