entertainment industry coach question 559: How do I tell a friend he can't work on my project?

With care. Many times, you have the best intentions to work with your friends and then the project grows and new people get involved. Before you know it, certain "people"become deal breakers. A real friend would not want to stand in the way of you getting your project made. Invite the friend to set so he can meet everyone and begin to build relationships with people so for the next project he'll have a better shot.

entertainment industry coach question 558:What other ways can I build relationships if I don't want to get mentors?

That's it. I'm putting my foot down. I refuse to answer this question (although you can look through older blogs and find answers) because anyone who does not want to get mentors, is not willing to do what it takes to make it in this industry. I've been coaching far too long and seen far too many people resist this simple task for months even years, only to discover when they finally reached out it was the GREATEST thing they'd ever done for their career.

Now, I don't know if it's fear stopping you, pride, or one of the many other excuses I've heard, but as far as I'm concerned, if you're not willing to go the extra mile and learn from the amazing people in our industry who have already done what you want to do, than I'd rather spend my valuable time working with the people who want to make it and will do what ever they have to do, for their business to succeed.

That tough love moment brought to you by The Greenlight Coach.

entertainment industry coach question 557:I know 4 or 5 CDs by name. What would be some ways to grow my relationship with them?

Well, first of all, you're an actor. You need to know 50-100 CDs minimum. So, 4 or 5 is a start, but know that you have to start thinking much bigger as of right now.

Now you mentioned in your email that you haven't spoken to them in a while. Has anything "update-worthy" happened to re-establish the relationships? Or could you pursue them as business mentors?

Think of something that would create a win/win for both parties.

Try reaching out on social media like Facebook, as well.

entertainment industry coach question 556:Do you have any connections for VO work?

As a coach I always tell my clients, that asking for work or for referrals from a complete stranger is not a good approach. Personally, I have 16 clients who are interested in VO work, so if I were going to connect anyone, it would be the people who I know, whose work ethic I admire, and whom I believe would be a good fit with the person I'd be connecting them with.

I don't know anything about the person who made this request. I asked how far along he is and he told me he has a VO demo, a home recording studio, and is new to this side of the business. So it's great that he's reaching out for connections, and it sounds like he's done his research about how to best prepare and present himself for success. Now, it's time to build relationships with people before going "straight for the referral or work." This guy may be great, but I have no idea who he is or what he's like, so to put my reputation on the line for a stranger is not a fair request to make in my opinion.

That said, he's out of Florida, and is asking for help, so if anyone has some advice or feedback for him please put it in the comment section. Advice and guidance is something that even strangers can say yes to.

entertainment industry coach question 554: How do I get on tv, radio, in magazines, etc.?

This is a question asked after yesterday's blog.

The answer is you pitch yourself. Emailing pitches to reporters and producers. The pitches should pertain to what's current and your "brand's" twist on it. There has to be a hook and it has to be relevant.

Make sure you're pitching to the right reporters and producers. If you're a horror film director and you have a child in preschool, and want to pitch a story, "Scary Daddy, Spooks Preschool Parents," you wouldn't pitch it to Dateline, but the View might find it entertaining.

Also, if this is new for you, start with local stations and local publications. It takes research to find the right fit, but it's worth it.

entertainment industry coach question 553: What does PR stand for and do I need it?

PR stands for Public Relations and everyone needs it. I've written blogs on branding. Once you are clear on your brand, you want to get it out there!

Outlets for PR are social media sites, blogs, newspapers, magazines, radio shows, and television. You can pay for PR or you can do your own for free depending on how far along you are in your career.

There's so much more to know, so email me if you have questions.

entertainment industry coach question 552:Why is sharing my stories important?

Okay, I wrote this question too, not because your questions aren't great, but because things keep happening that I want to share with you. So...

If you've ever seen me speak or if you've checked the "About Me" section on my website, you know that The Monkees are the reason I got into this industry and that I LOVE Mickey Dolenz. Tom McKenney TheManInTheHat.com, knew that about me and got me a ticket to the screening of Head (if you're a Monkees fan you know what that is).

So you see, when you share your stories with people, you become memorable, and people do nice things for you. Thanks, Tom!
