Entertainment industry coach Question 521: Is it okay to have a template mentor letter to send out to different people or should each be unique?

A template is just that... a template. It is your job to personalize each letter so that the person really feels like you are writing specifically to them (which you are, because there's something to be learned from each person). This particular person sent 3 letters to 3 people in the same company and only changed the name. It's too late now, but that is a no-no.

The whole reason for asking someone to mentor you as opposed to simply asking them for an "informational interview" is to make them feel special. That's how you create the win/win. This is not something to be lazy about. Suppose Apple or Coke or Nike got lazy about their advertising because they were doing well? There competition would clobber them and they'd disappear into obscurity. You have to take the time to do your business work properly, with thought and care. It reflects on how you do your job.

Now, all that said, don't beat yourself up over what's done. That's the past. Learn from this and move forward.
