entertainment industry coach question 641: Why did you tell me to sign up for Cynopsis.com?

Cynopsis is about everything television related; what's been bought, who's attached, what's premiering, what's been cancelled, etc. It is a great research tool. The person who asked this is a DP/Operator, and I suggested he subscribe for the free daily email from Cynopsis because even though it's giving high level information which would seem to be important to tv executives, writers, and agents, if you are in another classification and are interested in television you must be "in the know."

For example, today in the development section Cynosis reported that "The CW is bringing another DC Comics super hero to the small screen with plans to adapt Raven into a television series. The project received a script order via Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment and Diego Gutierrez is on board to write and be executive producer. Raven is a half-demon known as Rachel Roth and she is able to enter the minds of others to fight crime all the while remaining dark and secretive."

If this is a project that is of interest to you, now you have some information to start your targeted campaign.

Entertainment industry coach Question 520: How can I talk to Warner Bros. about a movie version of a vid game they own rights to?

You need a connection. Regular "Joes" don't get into Warner Brothers to discuss movie rights to WB properties. Either a literary agent, an entertainment attorney, or a production company would be your best bet to getting you in the door. How do you get to them? Again... connections. Whom do you know who is connected to one of the above? If no one, you're going to have to go back to the beginning of my blog and start reading on how to build relationships in the entertainment industry from where ever you live.

entertainment industry coach Question 461: How do you do a "set visit" when you work in post?

You may not. You can, because you still have the opportunities to meet producers and directors who can potentially hire you for future projects or give you referrals to people at post facilities whom you want to meet.

This is one of those situations where I give advice on a strategy and you make it work for your classification. In other words, if I tell an actor or a costume designer to do a set visit, because that's where they do their work (on set), then you would ask yourself...
"where do I do my work?"

And when a little voice inside your head pops up and says, "at post houses like Todd-AO or Warner Brothers," then instead of a set visit, you would visit the post houses. You use the same techniques to get post house visits that you would use to get a set visit. You also use the same etiquette.
