entertainment industry coach question 549: How do you find your own style that lands you the job?

This particular question is in regards to a prime time news spot, yet it's applicable to any position. Finding your own style (niche, brand, etc.) is really important.

Here's where to start:

1. Do a "brand study" of all of the other news anchors. What are their brands and how do they differ from each other?

2. Seek out mentors in your field for business advice on how they branded themselves.

3. Read books on personal branding.

4. Identify who the market is who will most respond to you. Tailor your "style" to your strongest assets and what will attract the largest audience.

5. Get unbiased feedback on your brand. Who you want to be and how people see you may be two different things.

entertainment industry coach question 548: Why wouldn't someone who is a friend call me back?

I'm going to have to refer you to Joanna Garzilli, America's Intuition Coach, because I don't have the access to know why people do or don't do things.

What I would say is if you know you haven't done anything to upset your friend, put yourself in your friend's shoes. What is going on in his/her life right now that would stand in the way of returning a phone call? Working long hours? Family matters? Anything that perhaps you don't know about that you should be inquiring about as a thoughtful friend?

Remember, in most cases, it's not about you. Be a good friend and make sure there is nothing going on in your friend's life that you should be supporting him/her with.

entertainment industry coach question 547: What do I talk about when I meet a mentor?

You talk about where you are in your career now, where you want to be in a year, and how you plan to get there.

The mentor's role is to give you feedback on how "do-able" your plan is, new ideas, and what his/her experiences were. Mentors can tell you what worked or what didn't work for them as they navigated their career path.

Have questions prepared that are "next step" questions. In other words, they've already been where you are, so you want the heads-up on what comes next. Allow them to share their insights and the possibilities for you to help you take the most direct path to achieving your goals.

entertainment industry coach question 546: I don't understand, isn't it our job to tell people we are available?

This was a question in response to yesterday's blog post. Yes, it is your job to let people know you are available for work. However, it's how you let them know that will determine how your relationship will evolve.

For example: If I give you advice for 2 hours and at the end you say, "Great thanks. And by the way, I'm available," it just added something unnecessary and for me, personally, annoying, because I already know a ton of people whom I coach and would hire before you. Why? Because I care about them, like them, and trust them. So by you telling me you're available, you've just turned me off a bit. When you say "think of me" it tells me that you don't have enough confidence that you made an impression that is memorable.

The people it is "your job" to tell that you are available, are the people for whom you are their first 5-10 calls when they are looking. They need to know you're available because they may assume you're already working.

Cold calling people on production lists who are working to let them know you're available is NOT strategic, time consuming, and very rarely creates results. Your time can be better spent developing relationships on a deeper level with targeted people.

When you are meeting people, there are subtle ways to let them know you're available which are not turn offs. It's all about the quality of your questions.

entertainment industry coach question 545: What about telling people you're available when you first meet them if you've talked for a while?

You can talk to someone for 5 hours straight. If it's the first time you've met him, you can let him know through the conversation what you're doing to generate work, thus making it clear that you're available. But meeting someone for the first time and saying you're available or "think of me if anything comes up," is a turn off. If you've done your job of creating the relationship, trust that they will think of you.

It takes three conversations to establish a relationship. People want to hire people they know, like, and trust. So "simmer down" and build the relationship before going for the work.

entertainment industry coach question 544: How do I get back into conversations with people I've been out of touch with?

People are busy. Unless this was a lifelong friend who tried to stay in touch with you and you didn't respond, he/she is not sitting around wondering why you haven't called.

Simply get back in touch. Something made you think of this person, so call and say, "You crossed my mind and it's been such a long time I wanted to reconnect."

If the reason he came to mind is because you saw he is working on a new show, don't ask for work. Thats a turn off. Your connections already have established work relationships. You have to rebuild yours with these people. No matter how badly you need the work, you can really turn a person off if you call them after 3 years and say, Hey, I see you've got a new project. I'm available."

entertainment industry coach question 543: I'm a DP and interested in laser treatment but I'm worried about side affects.

I am not a doctor, however, I'm posting this because I know TONS of DPs read this blog. I have heard this concern before.

I will tell you to do the research, weigh out the risks, and make the best decision.

Perhaps some DPs who have done this will respond (on the blog not on Facebook, so everyone can read your answer).

Good luck!

entertainment industry coach question 542: Are they really not bringing 24 back? My friends started a campaign.

You're breaking my heart! You know how much I love 24. I still won't delete it from #1 on my DVR even though I know it's never coming back.

I did hear they were making a movie. Not the same, but I'll be there opening weekend!

entertainment industry coach question 541: Should I pay people who are actors to manage me because they get the breakdowns?

It is illegal for actors to get the breakdowns. I have heard of groups of actors who formed legitimate management companies who pay for and receive the breakdowns legally. Whether they charge to represent you I don't know. I can't advise you to do anything illegal that affects someone's business/livelihood.

You have to do some more research and decide what risks you are willing to take for your career. Just know the guy from breakdown services is a very smart man and finds people who are stealing his product and you could potentially be sued.
